Gay Marriage in California

California's Supreme Court today struck down state law's same-sex marriage ban, finding the state's constitution "properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

There might be no better articulation of why this makes sense than this bit from San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders. Sanders is a conservative who had vowed to veto a city council resolution allowing gay marriage. He changed his mind and very poignantly and clearly explains why. I, for one, can think of nothing more to add.

  1. And the sun will come up tomorrow, perhaps a bit more britely.

Sometimes you guys in Southern California let us know what ought to be done as a matter of simple human decency.

  2. Thanks for sharing this, Ron.

As I have mentioned before, as an EMT I have been in homes where same sex partners had to deal with a serious illness or injury to one of them. My experience of seeing their love during tragedy convinced me that it was no different than the love I have for my wife. The mayor is right.

I believe that most people who oppose gay marriage would change their minds if they were more familiar with how gay couples actually live and love. It's all about relationships.

  4. Good God a politician votes his heart...now that is a long, long time coming. Hooray for your mayor whom I don't know at all but can deeply, deeply respect for pissing off his constituency in the name of progress. And you've gotta love a person who can change his mind based on fact and feeling (W could use a page out of this man's book.)
