It looks as though
Al Franken might win the final recount in Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden, in his typically candid style,
tells George Stephanopoulos that the U.S. economy is danger of absolutely tanking in 2009.
If Biden is right, I don't suppose it would hurt to have regular reassurances that we Americans are smart enough, good enough and doggone it, people like us. I feel comforted just thinking about it.
I have really been trying to make this sorta thing my mantra but I'm plagued by the bug that bit Biden...it's a savage little thing with vicious teeth and a lion's share of pessimism.
ReplyDeleteListen, as this is a Titanic kind of scenario, I'd rather have Biden yelling "We're sinking! We're sinking" so that all might be galvanized to try and get off rather than hear: "It's going to be OK, this boat cannot go under, don't worry!" and then find that I've drowned.
ReplyDeleteI like the guy. He doesn't lie.
This Minnesota election shows to me just how far the Republican Party has fallen. The party of Lincoln, T.R., and Eisenhower has been usurped by neocons and far-right relogious fanatics. Not that Coleman is necessarily a prototype of these 2 groups, mind you, but it looks like he may be taken down with them. No one ever said that life was fair.
ReplyDeletecce,
ReplyDeletethey say that pessimists have generally got a better grip on reality. I find that a little depressing, though, and would prefer not to think about it.
Milena,
I like Joe too. I'm sure that he's going to leave markets and media flapping their arms more than once in the next 4 to 8 years.
Will,
the sad thing is that when the polity tries to penalize the extremists, they actually take out the moderates. Why? The swing states are not won by extremists and they are the states that change hands. In this case, democracy does the opposite of what we'd hope.
Kind of like Linc Chaffee In Rhode Island. Of all the Republicans to get rid of in 2006, he was the one that they shouldn't have gotten rid of. And Susan Collins barely dodged a bullet this year. In the mean-time, idiots like Inhoffe continue to run roughshod. I like the way that you think, my friend.
