When you combine the odds of an individual being employed and parenting a newborn, a random native-born person has roughly a 5% chance of fulfilling both criteria over the decade. A newly arrived immigrant has roughly a 20% chance.

A crackdown on the rate of immigration means lower birthrates and job creation. That is, this puts additional strain on the social security system. And that cost - as significant as it is - may pale in comparison to the cost of generally lower level of dynamism, a slow down in the rate at which new ideas and perspectives tend to come in through the doors of immigration and youth.
