Damon is right about focusing on the pace of change, which is slower in the heartland. But I think the main drivers in this election were civil rights and culture, with democrats seen as looking out for women and non-whites at the expense of men and whites, and the GOP standing tall for NASCAR, the military, guns, and the good ol' boys. In general, humans will gravitate towards a more measured (slow) change than a party that advocates quicker (possibly more disruptive) changes. Americans are a slow change folk. Or at least I am.
