What's the difference in the GOP from when you were growing up?
If you're fiscally responsible, this is not your party. If you believe in a moderate foreign policy characterized by alliances, free trade and the ability to operate in an international environment, this is not your party. If you believe in limited federal government, this is not your party. If you believe that the government should stay out of your bedroom, this is very definitely not your party. In fact, I would argue that unless you believe in the American imperium, imposed on the world by force, or unless you believe in the literal interpretation of the Book of Revelations, this is not your party.

Joe Wilson can say a lot in a few words.
Hopefully, the party that "is not" will come back. That is the party that has brought out the best in America.
How can we stop the mud and hate? It's demeaning to our entire society.
The GOP has lost it's way. I know many conservatives who no longer indentify themselves as Republicans. Maybe, after four years of Obama (like four years of Carter), we'll have an energized conservative movement and bring back the spirit of smaller federal government, fiscal responsibility, and basic common sense.
Gads. To think that on Tuesday we will finally stand isolated within the little cubicle of the polling booth and make a democratic decision that will be but one ballot choice amongst millions, but will be the single offering of our keenest hopes, beliefs, and political camaraderie.
(Joseph Wilson, not to be picking of nits, but alas it's only one Revelation)
John McCain says (in referring to his 'difference's of opinion with Sarah Palin) that "Two mavericks will not always agree, but it sure makes it fun". Well John, I think Maverick's have their place ... but they don't seem to have much success in 'team' sports.
Barack Obama doesn't have a portfolio of his own to point to, thus making him a perfect recipient of the suggestions of those in his party willing to force their own portfolio's upon him (Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, etc.) and that literally gives me cause for grave concern about the future of the nation that was founded on the principles of less government and more 'rolling up of the shirt sleeves to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps'.
Oh if only we could have a "Presidential Idol" and have Ron Davidson compete amongst other lesser mortals, allowing us the option of pressing #3 on our cordless handsets to select Ron Davidson while he waits staring out into the vast darkness of the Grand Ol Opry, blinded by the lights that seek to reveal a single blemish... but can find none.
Is it too late?
Sorry to be dense, but how does believing a literal interpretation of the book of Revelations make the GOP your party?
LH,
Let's keep our fingers crossed that a humiliating defeat gets us a sensible alternative again. I suspect it'll be years away, though.
Pinky,
even the cynic in me thinks that it would not take much to improve the Republican party after George retires.
anya,
I think that Joe Wilson is talking about the Armageddon wing of the Republican party that sees ineffectual middle eastern policy as inevitable rather than ridiculous.
